Sensory Diet Tracker: How to Track and Optimize Sensory Strategies
A sensory diet is one of the most powerful tools for supporting children with sensory processing differences. But it only works if you know what activities help, when to use them, and how effective they actually are. That's where tracking comes in.
What is a Sensory Diet?
A sensory diet is a personalized plan of activities and strategies designed to provide the sensory input a person needs to stay regulated throughout the day. Think of it like a nutritional diet—but instead of food, you're feeding the nervous system the input it craves (or carefully avoiding input that overwhelms).
The term was coined by occupational therapists Patricia Wilbarger and Julia Wilbarger in 1991. Unlike a one-time intervention, a sensory diet is an ongoing, scheduled approach to managing sensory needs proactively.
Examples of Sensory Diet Activities
- Proprioceptive input — Heavy work like carrying groceries, push-ups against a wall, jumping on a trampoline
- Vestibular input — Swinging, spinning, rocking, hanging upside down
- Tactile input — Playing with playdough, fidget toys, brushing protocols
- Auditory regulation — Noise-canceling headphones, calming music, white noise
- Visual calming — Dimmed lights, sunglasses, reducing visual clutter
- Oral input — Chewy snacks, drinking through a straw, crunchy foods
Why Track Your Sensory Diet?
Occupational therapists design sensory diets, but parents and caregivers implement them—in the messy reality of daily life. Tracking bridges the gap between clinical recommendations and what actually works at home.
Find What Helps Your Child
Not every strategy works for every child. Weighted vests calm some children; others find them constricting. Tracking reveals which strategies consistently help in which contexts — building evidence for what belongs in your child's toolkit.
Optimize Timing
A strategy that works beautifully before school might backfire at bedtime. Tracking when you use strategies—and what follows—helps you optimize timing for maximum benefit.
Communicate with Your OT
Instead of saying "I think the brushing helps sometimes," you can show your OT data: "Brushing before transitions reduced meltdowns by 60% over three weeks." Data-driven conversations lead to better-optimized sensory diets.
Key insight: A sensory diet isn't static. Needs change with growth, seasons, stress levels, and life transitions. Ongoing tracking ensures your strategies evolve with your child.
How to Track Sensory Diet Effectiveness
Log When You Use Strategies
Note what activity you did, when you did it, and the context (before school, after meltdown, during homework, etc.).
Rate the Outcome
Did it help? A simple scale works: helped a lot, helped somewhat, no effect, made it worse. Over time, patterns emerge.
Note Conditions
The same strategy might work differently based on context. Was your child already dysregulated? Were they tired? Hungry? Capturing conditions helps you understand when to use each tool.
Review and Adjust Weekly
Spend 15 minutes each week looking at your data. Which strategies show up on good days? Which seem to have no effect? Share insights with your OT to refine the plan.
